CHAPTER 10

“Second!”

Dragged from his errant thoughts of Rachel, David shook himself and returned to the activity around him. He watched as Rodriguez scooped up the bunt and launched to second during the practice drill, overthrowing enough that AD had to jump to catch it, barely able to tag the base before firing the ball to first.

He winced at that. Roddy wasn’t going to be happy with that, but he’d had a good practice regardless. He was a fantastic catcher, and his only hang-up was that he was young. He’d only been up from the minors for a year, and he had yet to really make his mark. In that sense, Pittsburgh would be a great team for him. Time to grow and room to develop without much by way of pressure.

Of course, having David on the team would also ensure that Roddy didn’t get much attention.

Not that Roddy would blame David for it. No one could help the Six Pack fever, and David had worked hard to be as good as he was.

If only he had a team to match it.

He stepped up for his turn, crouching down into position.

Coach bunted the ball, and it veered left. “First!”

David dashed forward, thinking quickly as he faced third. He pivoted on his right foot, his left sliding in the dirt to stabilize him as he threw the ball hard towards first base. Something pulled tight in his left knee, and he grunted softly, watching as the ball soared right into Lima’s glove with a perfect sounding clap.

“Atta boy, Grizz!” Lima called, pointing his glove at him.

David nodded and straightened, walking back to home plate, the back of his left knee roaring at him, but not enough to limp.

He’d need to watch that. His knees were his lifeblood in this game, and if there was anything going on there…

“Infield drills,” Coach told them all suddenly. He turned to look at David and Roddy. “You guys can hop in if you want, or join the outfielders. Unless you want to jump over to the bullpen, but they’re almost done.”

David and Roddy shared looks and shrugged. “I’ll go infield,” Roddy offered. “Looks like I could use the help.”

“And I was just thinking I could use some pop-up work,” David added with a smile. “Always a nice refresher.”

They tagged each other’s gloves and jogged to the separate ends of the field. The outfielders cheered when David joined them, acting as though an outfield versus infield game of dodgeball was about to start. He shook his head, rolling his eyes. The outfielders were great guys, and they had all been with him last year for the World Series run, but they were also the biggest goofballs he knew outside of the Six Pack.

And the bullpen.

There was just something wrong with the pitchers on this team, and no one could explain it.

Cowboy crouched in preparation for the first pop-up and began whistling the fight song for Albany State, arguably Belltown’s greatest rival, and his Alma Mater.

“Ugh, what is that awful sound?” David groaned with a wince, covering his ears.
